What to expect at your first physiotherapy appointment after getting into a car accident.

Have you gotten into a car accident and keep asking yourself if you really need to see a physiotherapist? Or, you are puzzled as to what steps to take next? We understand that getting into an accident can be stressful and very overwhelming. To help you ease into the process, here is a guide on what steps you need to take to ensure a smooth transition.

Our physiotherapist, Himani Singh Gupta, consulted a patient after she got into a car accident.

What should you do right after getting into an accident?

1. Contact your insurance company within 10 days from the date of the accident.
2. Next, contact your family doctor and set up an appointment with the physiotherapist

After you have booked your physiotherapy appointment, here is what to expect at your first visit:

1. Arrive around 15 minutes early. This will give you enough time to fill out the necessary forms. Make sure to bring the pink slip/ insurance.
2. Expect to be in the clinic for about an hour. Your physiotherapist will perform an in-depth assessment, which will include discussing your injuries, goals and making a treatment plan with you.
3. Discuss your injury with your physiotherapist and share any symptoms you have been experiencing. This is important to share with your physiotherapist so they can determine if there is any underlying sign of a concussion, whiplash, etc.
4. At the end of your appointment, your physiotherapist will inform you how many visits are necessary to reach your goal. After that, you may book your appointment at the reception according to your availability and convenience.

What can you expect from your physiotherapist and their assessment?

1. Treat you with respect and establish a meaningful patient-therapist relationship.
2. Walk you through your health concerns and any of the assessments they will be conducting. By providing a rational and purpose behind their techniques, it keeps you involved and informed throughout the process.
3. Work alongside you to determine a treatment plan best suited to your needs and end goals. Your physiotherapist will also discuss any barriers you may face and aid in reducing any limitations.
4. Obtain consent for any examinations or to perform manual treatment.
5. Advise you on what steps you can take next to be successful in your treatment and prescribe with you a home exercise plan that can be done at your own convenience.

All these steps will help you prepare and get into a better mindset when you do arrive for your first physiotherapy appointment. If you are still experiencing confusion or have more questions, you can always ask the front desk personnel or your physiotherapist. Book your appointment with Ability Physiotherapy today.
